Walking sticks: an ally not to be overlooked

Walking poles are often underestimated, yet they provide real comfort on the trail. They allow for better weight distribution , relieve pressure on the legs and joints, and improve balance, especially over long distances and on uneven terrain.

When you're starting out, it's normal to ask yourself questions:
Cork or foam handle? Aluminium or carbon? Retractable or non-retractable poles?
We will take the time to guide you simply.

Adjustable poles: the best choice for the trail

For hiking, and more specifically for the Way of St. James, we clearly recommend adjustable poles .

They allow:

  • to easily adapt to ascents and descents,

  • to avoid any sizing errors,

  • and to be stored more easily upon arrival at the hostel.

This is the most versatile and practical solution for a pilgrim.

The different types of retractable poles

There are two main systems of adjustable poles:

Quick-release retractable poles

When folded, these sticks generally measure around 60 cm .
They are easy to adjust, reliable, and widely available. They are an excellent choice for those seeking simplicity and efficiency.

Retractable cable poles

As their name suggests, an internal cable is energized to deploy the pole.
Their main advantage is their small size : once packed, they often measure only 35 to 39 cm , which makes it easy to slip them inside a backpack .

Aluminium or carbon: which material to choose?

Not all poles are made from the same material, and this affects the weight, strength, and budget.

The aluminum sticks

It's the most common material. Aluminium is robust and reliable , with a good weight-to-price ratio.
There are different grades of aluminum, which explains the price differences. It's a safe choice for most walkers.

Carbon fiber poles

Carbon fiber is a very light and strong material. It is generally found on higher-end models.
They offer excellent walking comfort, especially on long journeys, but with a higher budget.

Choosing the right handle: a comfort factor not to be overlooked.

The handle is in direct contact with the hand, so its choice is of utmost importance.

  • Plastic
This is the most basic solution. Its main advantage remains the price, but comfort is more limited over long distances.

  • Mousse
It offers a good grip and appreciable comfort. Different foam qualities are available, generally offering excellent value for money .

  • Cork
Very pleasant to the touch, cork absorbs moisture well, whether it's perspiration or rain. It's a popular choice on the trail for its long-lasting comfort.
