What should you pack in your backpack on the Camino de Santiago?

Before leaving, we all share the same fear:
forgetting the essential equipment that could make our journey easier… or on the contrary setting off with too much stuff , extra grams, or even kilos, that we will have to carry every day.

Based on our experience on the Camino de Santiago, we're going to share the essentials with you: what to take in your backpack , nothing more, nothing less, to walk peacefully.

Choosing the right backpack: the basics

The first step, even before discussing the contents, is to choose your backpack carefully .

  • A bag that is too big encourages you to overfill it, with the risk of carrying 12 to 14 kg, or even more , throughout the journey.

  • A bag that is too small can force you to be too minimalist and lose comfort.

The real question is: what is the ideal volume for my hiking backpack?

To answer this delicate question, we have provided you with a link to the blog.

Essentials to have in your backpack

We assume that you will be walking for several days, or even several weeks , on the trail.

Here are the essentials , regardless of the time of year:

  • The credential
This is the pilgrim's passport. Without it, you will not be able to access certain hostels or obtain the Compostela at the end of your journey.

  • A pair of hiking boots
Your feet will be your most faithful allies. Take the time to choose a pair that is suitable for your feet and for long-distance walking.

  • Hiking socks
Inseparable from shoes, they help prevent chafing and blisters.

  • A sleeping bag or a sleeping bag liner
Since COVID, most hostels, especially in Spain, require you to have your own bedding.

  • A pair of walking sticks
Very useful for relieving leg, knee and back pain over time.

  • Hygiene supplies
Towel, shower gel… Hostels are not hotels, it's better to be self-sufficient.

  • Protection against the rain
Poncho, waterproof jacket, waterproof pants or bag cover: even in summer, rain can make an appearance on the trail.

If you are traveling outside of summer (spring or autumn)

In addition to the previous list, we recommend:

  • 3 quick-drying t-shirts (short or long sleeves)
1 for walking, 1 for the evening, 1 in rotation during drying.

  • 2 sweaters or hiking jackets
1 for walking, 1 for the evening.

  • 2 pairs of walking pants
Convertible models that can be turned into shorts are very practical (2 in 1).

  • 1 lightweight hiking down jacket
    Ideal for cool mornings.

  • A head covering
A beanie if you get cold easily, otherwise a cap or hat. A visor is always useful in the rain.

  • A neck warmer
Very pleasant in the morning to protect oneself from the cool wind.

If you are going during the hot season

In summer, you can be more minimalist, even if walking conditions may be more demanding.

We recommend:

  • 3 quick-drying t-shirts

  • A UV-protective shirt or t-shirt (UPF 50+)
To properly protect the skin during long hours in the sun.

  • A UV-protective neck warmer
    Lightweight and very effective.

  • A light jacket or sweater
    Some evenings may remain cool.

  • Walking trousers or shorts
Convertible models remain an excellent option.

  • A cap or hat with UV protection
