Choosing the right accommodation on the Way of St. James

Our tips for sleeping well, night after night

On the Camino de Santiago, sleeping well is just as important as walking well. The body recovers at night, and suitable bedding makes all the difference between a pleasant stage… and a difficult day.

The sleeping bag: the foundation of nighttime comfort

The sleeping bag is the central piece of your nighttime gear. It should be chosen according to the season, your sensitivity to the cold, and the weight you are willing to carry.

Synthetic (polyester) linings

Polyestersleeping bagsare very common, and for good reason.

Their advantages:

  • Good value for money
  • Highly resistant to moisture
  • Easy to maintain
  • Dries quickly

They are generally a bit heavier and bulkier than feather bags, but still an excellent choice for a first trip.

Bags made of goose or duck feathers

Feathersleeping bagsoffer exceptional thermal comfort for a very low weight.

Their advantages:

  • Very lightweight
  • Excellent thermal insulation
  • They compress easily into a backpack.

On the other hand, they are more susceptible to moisture and require a little more care. For pilgrims mindful of the weight of their pack, this is often the most comfortable solution.

Weight and temperature: finding the right balance

On the trail, every gram counts. A bag that's too warm will be unnecessarily heavy, a bag that's too light can hinder your recovery.

We generally recommend:

  • A lightweight to medium-weightbagfor warmer weather
  • A warmer bag if you're going in spring, autumn, or if you're sensitive to the cold.

There's no need to aim for the extreme: the majority of accommodations offer protected sleeping conditions.

The sleeping bag sheet: a valuable ally

Often underestimated, the sleeping bag lineris nevertheless a very useful piece of equipment on the trail.

It can be used for:

  • Gaining a few degrees of warmthinside a sleeping bag
  • To be used alone in summer, as a light sleeping bag
  • To improve hygiene in dormitories

The different materials of sleeping bag sheets

Each material offers different sensations and uses.

Cotton

  • Pleasant to the touch of the skin
  • Solid and durable
  • Heavier and bulkier

Microfiber / polyester

  • Light
  • Quick drying
  • Easy to maintain

Silk

  • Very light
  • Very compact
  • Comfortable and breathable
  • Provides a slight increase in heat

Silk is particularly appreciated by pilgrims seeking to reduce the weight of their bag while maintaining good comfort.

Do I need a sleeping bag or just a sleeping bag liner?

It all depends on the time of year and your sensitivity to the cold.

  • In the middle of summer, some pilgrims use only a sleeping bag liner.
  • Outside of summer, a lightweight sleeping bag supplemented by a sleeping bag lineris often the best solution.

This combination offers versatility, comfort and adaptability to temperature variations.
