On the Camino de Santiago, we meet walkers and pilgrims every day who ask themselves the same question:
“What clothes do you really need to walk well?”

Good news: you don't need a complicated or ultra-technical wardrobe. The key is to choose comfortable clothes, suitable for walking and changing weather conditions , while remaining easy to use, especially when you're starting out.

Based on our field experience, here is what we recommend.

The t-shirt: the foundation of comfort

The t-shirt is in direct contact with the skin, so its choice is crucial.

We primarily recommend two types of materials:

  • Technical polyester
Lightweight, breathable, and quick-drying, it's a great choice for summer or for those who sweat easily. It's a practical and economical solution.

  • Merino wool
A bit more expensive, but extremely comfortable. It regulates temperature, minimizes odors, and remains pleasant even after several days of wear. It's an excellent choice for pilgrims on long walks.

👉 Our advice: 2 to 3 t-shirts are more than enough, provided they are suitable for walking.

Shorts or trousers: freedom and protection

The stocking must allow total freedom of movement while protecting against chafing.

  • The shorts are ideal for warm weather, light and comfortable for long summer walks.

  • Hiking pants , often made of synthetic material, protect from the sun, wind and vegetation.

  • Convertible (zip-off) pants are a great compromise for beginners: shorts in the morning, pants when the weather changes.

We advise against using cotton, which dries slowly and can cause irritation.

Socks: a detail that is anything but

We often talk about shoes, but socks play a crucial role in walking comfort. A bad pair can quickly cause chafing or blisters, while a good pair of socks is completely unnoticeable.

Which materials should be prioritized?

As with clothing, we advise against cotton, which retains moisture.

  • Synthetic socks (polyester, polyamide)
They dry quickly, wick away sweat well, and are durable. They're a great choice for beginner walkers.

  • Merino wool
Highly appreciated on the trails. It regulates temperature, limits odors, and remains comfortable even after several days of use. Ideal for long hikes.

Some socks combine synthetic and merino wool , offering an excellent compromise between comfort and durability.

How many pairs should I bring?

We generally recommend 3 to 4 pairs of socks :

  • 1 pair worn

  • 1 or 2 spare pairs

  • 1 pair that dries or is a “spare” pair

This makes it easy to manage perspiration, rain or washing, without overloading the bag.

👉 Quick tip: changing your socks at lunchtime can sometimes do as much good as a good meal.

A warm layer: even in summer

Even in the middle of summer, cool mornings, altitude or the end of the day can be surprising.

  • A lightweight fleece or

  • A thin warm jacket

are usually sufficient. The goal is not to be hot while walking, but not to be cold when standing still .

The essential waterproof jacket or rain cape

It's one of the most important pieces of clothing on the journey.

A good waterproof jacket or rain cape should be:

  • Waterproof (rainproof)

  • Breathable (to avoid the sauna effect)

  • Windbreaker

No need for a very heavy or complex model: a simple, reliable and easy-to-put-on jacket will do the job perfectly.

👉 Field tip: even if the sun is out, a waterproof jacket always has a place in the bag.

Some simple principles to remember

When we advise novice pilgrims, we always come back to the same rules:

  • Prioritize technical subjects

  • Avoid cotton for walking

  • Think in terms of layers rather than thick clothing

  • Choose clothes that have been tested and are comfortable , not necessarily the most expensive ones.

Walk light, walk serenely

The right equipment isn't everything, but it greatly enhances the experience . Appropriate clothing allows you to focus on what matters most: the journey, the encounters, and the pleasure of walking.

In our shops located along the Camino de Santiago, we have been equipping pilgrims for years. We know that every walker is different, and our role is first and foremost to reassure you and guide you towards simple and effective choices .

Good luck!
and above all… happy walking
